PostSubject: Classic Lionel Trains Repair/Restoration   Sun Dec 02, 2012 8:58 pm

Anybody out there into old Lionel Trains? My wife asked me to try and get her fathers old train set working. For the first time I dug it out of the box and it's apparent that its in rough shape. All the track is too corroded and rusted so the plan there will be to invest in new track. The set is a post war setup purchased around 1953. The transformer is very rough.....

I have a smaller train and decided to test the engine on the live track. The headlight and horn work but the motors just hum. This set including the engines haven't been tried or used since the mid 60's. Any idea where to start???

Here's the "train wreck" transformer. ZW model....power cord cut off, extensive internal corrosion, missing light cover and decal....

As for the engines, the first has got to date back to the 40's or early fifties. I'm unsure of the make and model. I've had it apart, cleaned all contacts etc. Runs great but is a bit noisy. I wasn't sure how or where to lubricate the motor so I left it as is for the time being...

Next up is a Vintage Lionel New York Central GM 2333-20 Powered Diesel. I replaced a burned out bulb for the light and found one disconnected wire inside. Looks very clean but only humms when on the track...

I had one when I was a kid Wayne but don't know the first thing about them. Mine would have been around the same vintage as I was 6 in i1953. Engines were really heavy from what I remember.

Im with Jim Wayne I have had several when i was a kid, But I can't remember a lot about them, I know none of mine had the wreck conntrol. Just forward and reverse. I can sort of remember though when they hummed meaned the little electrick motor was bad.

I even had some wind up ones they made for the poor kids. Would have a fortune if they were all in good shape and I hadthem now. Smile

I dropped off the two engines, old caboose and one of my broken cars at the hobby ship for repairs. I shipped the ZW transformer to a guy in Birmingham NC who restores them. Should be done around January 15th.

....."Phase 1" of it's restoration is complete! There just so happened to be an incomplete set on ebay missing the Engine and Marx transformer which were the only 2 pieces I had! Just nailed the set which includes Original box, track, the full set of cars and a few cords and accessories! Once I get the engine back from the shop one of grandpa's two trains will be complete again and ready to roll!!! Smile

Thanks for sharing your father/son project with us Wayne. Smile Your train set looks and works great. I bet you Ryan had a great time with Dad building that. You are creating wonderful memories with your son Wayne...Something that he'll always remember...not to mention the enjoyment right now of the train set itself. What a nice vintage set you have there. God bless you all for continued enjoyment and memories yet to be created with your whole family this new year.

Yep...same set Carlos. The engines are repaired and as you saw in the other post the Marx set running the track in the video is good to go thanks to an NOS set of the boxed cars! Smile The larger Diesel is almost there but my transformer is too weak to run it. Gotta wait until the vintage transformer comes back restored around Jan. 15th.

I wouldn't have started the thread in the CCC Drive-in theatre section if I had seen this thread first. Very enjoyable read Wayne. Thanks! I can't believe you found a set on e-bay missing exactly what you already had. What a blessing huh? I have HO trains in my basement...sort of half set up at the moment. I used to enjoy them as a kid and an adult but have not messed with them in many years. Maybe I'll start this winter Question Way to go...looks like you are a having a great time together with Ryan. Surely your youngest will be into it real soon too. Laughing

Easy fix Bob. I just merged that thread into this one! Wink We were very blessed to find the box set missing the engine. After the steamer was broken down and cleaned and the motor lubricated it was good to go.

The folks in this hobby pride themselves on how cheaply they can get parts and so on so I've challenged myself to do the same! As for your trains you should get em going for us to see!!!! That would be a great read to see what you've accumulated over the years. Smile

Thanks for merging the threads Wayne. I appreciate it and enjoy model trains so much. Please keep us up to date with any additions to your set. You're also encouraging me to get downstairs and do something with mine. The winter months are good time for this. 🤡

After some issues with the deisel I've decided to tear them down and restore them. We've been working diligently on our 50's vintage layout. Nice work Wayne. Your son will remember doing this together for the rest of his life.
