Im doing an H.O. its on a 4x8 i have some trains but none of them to my liking,Ill buy a quality train set last,so far i have the track laid down and a Mountain built about 3/4 of the way,for me the toughest part is getting it to look real the landscape ect...
I have 8 quarts of turf different shades, and 5 buildings so far but havent built them yet,

Theres a train exibit close by and Ive gotten some Ideas from them guys, for instance you can get wood skewers like those used for kabobs, paint them brown stick them in the foam and put green brillo/steel wool padding on the tops and youll have incredibly realistic looking trees,as you know its a project, they have some real cool 57-58 plymouths for that scale,to help accsessorize the set.
Im replicating this layout as closley as I can Im goin to change some things on it,like the roads...You may have seen this one before-

Thanks Christine. This hobby fell into our laps when grandpa decided to give Ryan his old trains. You know me! I dive into everything LOL

Nice layout Carlos. There are quite a few out there that will blow your mind. The appeal for me is trying to replicate a fully functional layout a kid in the 50's could have had. Not too worried about winning any awards here! LOL

Here's one that will blow your mind! Check out the little drive in....

Wayne My Cousin Buddy and I when we were about 10 or 11 or so we had two hobbies Base Ball and Trains I din't know which one we loved best. We was into it for several years, We had the ones that you wound up to start and then went into the electric . Man you can't beleive how many hours we had played with them. I wish I had the ones I played with when I was a kid. We made a lot of our towns and everything. We had a big imadgination. I can just picture Me and Buddy now playing with the trains. We didn't even know anything else existed we would get so invalved. Our Moms would tell us it is time to eat and we woujld say Later Mom we can eat anytime. Smile Trains are Hobbys for three year old till 100. Never get too old. If I had the time I would probly get another traikn set. Probly would have to get a loan now. Smile

Now that it's getting cold outside I decided to get crackin and resurrect this project. Dusted off the train table and started by stripping down the powered A to the frame. I thoroughly cleaned it with parts solvent and after drying for 24hrs I stripped it down in the glass bead cabinet which worked out great.

I'm leaning towards using a dark primer first as I've come to admire a bit of a darker grey. I purchased the correct paint and hope to shoot the frame as soon as I strip the wheel guards. I may hold off and do all 3 frames together. Depends on how ambitious I'm feeling! Smile

If I can I am going to re-use as many of the original parts as I can. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Smile

I have put that project on hold for now Joe. I want to get back to my original vision of a "themed" room as opposed to exact replication of any one item. I'm sure I'll get back on it as soon as I grow bored with the trains! LOL! My interests come in "cycles".....and no they are not monthly! LOL! Hee! Hee!

I'll be looking forward to your progress on this project Wayne. I really enjoy model trains. I've had a good portion of my HO trains for nearly 50 years now and I still love to mess around with them.

Cool gents! We got into this hobby by accident really. Grandpa decided to give us his old non functioning trains and parts from when he was a kid. I love everything vintage so didn't take long for us to start puttering. His ZW for example was in really bad shape and we brought it back.

Nice job! That looks like a brand new Vintage Transformer now. Where on earth did you find the decal and....the little round red lens for it Wayne?

The model train hobby is massive bob. They remanufacture everything imaginable. I sent this out to a professional restorer who completely restored it inside and out. He had the decal new and the lenses are remade as well. I've managed to rebuild the 022 tracks with the original switches myself. You can buy anything you need. Shame our old mopars arent that easy! Smile

No kidding. I knew model railroading was popular but had no idea so many parts were re-manufactured. I always figured used parts would have to be found. I imagine you're talking mainly about Lionel though.

The main set is a Lionel NYC F3 Diesel. I purchased the Sante Fe F3 set because the NYC set needs to be restored and my cousin who passed away had a Sante Fe set when we were kids. His set was stolen so I bought this as a sort of tribute to him out of love and respect.

I decided on a new layout. This will be a challenge for us beginners but worth a try. No doubt this will be a lot of action for the kids packed into a small space. May be tough to pull off on a 4x8 table with regular O gauge track but ya'll know me! LOL! In fact I hope to add quite a few vintage 50's operating accessories to really ramp this up! Smile

Got lucky and won this vintage operating milk car and platform. It has been touched up and serviced so  we should be able to have fun with this right from the get go! Serviced controller to match coming as well! Smile

Last but not least comes an arbor press I bought off a friend for $20.00. It's a bit of overkill for toy trains being a #3 (3 Ton Capacity) but well worth it. Once I machine a few accessories I'll be able to press on my own wheels, R&R rivets and be able to fully service our growing collection! Smile

Wayne that is going to be a very busy layout! Don't forget to look at the FlexTrack they have now for the O gage 3 rail. Its a big help and then your not tied into a cookie cutter layout. Im very limited on normal radius track because I run the scaled steamers like the NY Central Hudson. They make the turns but only at slow speeds. If I kick it up a bit it will jump the corners lol. That's a nice layout you have planned though! Good luck! Smile

Thanks Brian. To me both fast and flextrack would be like putting 20" rims and hydraulics on a 58 plymouth!!!!!!!!!!Laughing

If it's not vintage across the board then there is no board.

CASE IN POINT: The O gauge 22 track switches are available in a new reproduction. They are virtually identical to the old ones. I bought 2 new in the box. Then I flipped them over and saw the MADE IN CHINA stickers on the back. They both got fired like boomerangs into the trash can. Shocked

How about some pictures of your steamers and layout? Twisted Evil

Ha Ha I had a hunch Wayne you were keeping it all old school.. I cant say I blame you. The only thing I love about the flex track is its new and very easy to make any shape you about want. I see it at a lot of train shows. And yes I also come across a lot of china made stuff. The American made train days are long gone. Which is a shame..

That's why I'm keeping this layout vintage. There's a lot out there by way of reasonably priced sets, cars and operating accessories. Most need work but anything worth saving usually does.

Nice Brian! Smile Is that "O" scale? Gotta love the old steamers. Nothing like filling the room with smoke from one of those bad boys! Smile

I've thought about investing in one down the road. The problem is I have expensive taste and a wallet that won't back it up! Laughing

I really want a pre-war Standard Gauge Blue Comet! LOL Only what...8 to 10k I think? Hee! Hee!
