PostSubject: My red '57 Fury   Fri Dec 02, 2011 7:37 pm

Ever since the later part of the seventies, I had searched for a '57 or '58 Fury. I found the occasional Belvedere, Savoy, or Plaza, but rarely ever a Fury. The several I did see were too expensive, or worse, not for sale.

In 2002 I was approached by a fellow in town, asking me if I'd help fix a carburetor on his Fury. I quizzed him about the car, as I had never known one in this area. When he opened the dooor to his garage, there it was. An honest to God '57 Fury, but it looked like it had been parked in the woods years ago. I fixed the carburetor, and we were able to fire the car up, which also fired his wife up, as the door to their kitchen was open when the cloud of smoke wafted into their house.

Scott's plans for the car were to fix it up for his son, as a Christine clone. Periodically I would drive by, and the car became less and less a car, as parts were removed. I decided to stop by one day as all there was left was the chassis, and rear body connected. Scott told me it would be too difficult for him to fix reasonably, due to the rust issues, and he was going to sell parts from it on E-bay. I asked him how much had been sold, and he said he had not started any auctions yet.

I made an offer on the car, and he took it. The decision to paint the car red was not influenced so much by Christine but several years prior, it seemed every car I restored was blue. I had never owned a red car in my life, so back then I decided my next car done would be red, regardless of what it was.

This has been my daily driver car for close to ten years now, also driven cross-country, the way they were designed to. Being I did not have a digital camera at the time, so no resto photos were recorded. Here are some photos of her in action!

John you really have a knack for taking great pictures but I still can't believe you use that beautiful car as a daily driver. Looks more like it belongs in a show.

Awesome pics, it's cool you use it as a daily driver, I don't like the idea of a Fury being a trailer queen!

Thanks, everyone!

I find car shows fun, but even more fun is when you create a spontaneous 'show' just by pulling into a gas station or restaurant.

Thanks, Joe!

We had pulled into the U-Drop-Inn Conoco station to take a few photos, when the state trooper pulled in. Turns out he was a Mopar man himself, and he was delighted to be in the photo that my wife took.

I'll someday get to New York, hopefully by driving, I prefer that over flying, but will let you know when that does happen.

Nice car! I have always wondered - what are these cars like on gas?

I am hoping for 15mpg with the 440....yeah, I know its a long shot but I think I can pull it off.

If I drive really easy, the best I ever got was somewhere around 18 MPG on the highway.

Typically, with all the in town driving I do here, it decreases to about 13-15 MPG.

Dang John, I love the different shot spots of the fury .The old gas station and the desert scenes are my favorite. My dream is to drive my Belvy into death valley and into the mojave
desert area. I have an idea, why don't you do the black and white police version witht your fury plymouth? You must be tired of red by now John, just think of all that attention with the cops you would get. Heck they probably wouldn't even give you a speeding ticket if you got caught speeding.

I may be wrong Carlos but I think John's Fury stood further away from the camera than that Chrysler. That way, an optical illusion was created making the Plymouth look small.

How long did it take you to put her back together?

Good to see you, Jessica!

I figure that I spent roughly eight months to get this car road ready, mind you it was not a nut and bolt restoration, just done to make a nice driver.
