Retromania, Palm Springs, October 2012

I was invited to this event over a year ago when I was visiting some friends in Florida. M'lisa was not able to get off work, due to the farmers finishing harvest, and getting all their farmhand's vehicles repaired. She works at a body shop, and writes all their estimates. I asked a good friend's son who has been working for me part time, if he wanted to go, and I told him I would pay his way if he gave my car a thorough cleaning, as it was rather dirty.
Damian did a very good job, so the trip was on!

It was a 500 mile trip each way, but I've driven my car much farther than that, so no concerns. We drove south to Bakersfdield, and took the two lane highway up over Tehachapi pass. We needed to fill up there, and it was only forty degrees in the high elevation. I started smelling a sulfur smell, and figured it was from something outside, and drove onwards.

As darkness settled in, I spotted a sign for a Big Boy restaurant off the next exit. Damian had never heard of Big Boy, and I told him how I would eat there with my folks growing up in Michigan, and he needed to try it. The dinner was plenty filling and good. We came out to the car, and the battery had not enough power to turn the engine over, and then and there i figured what the sulfur smell earlier was. The voltage regulator must have failed, and cooked the battery by overcharging it. I had to call AAA for a jump start, nobody in the parking lot had cables, or was afraid I would ruin their new car. We waited about twenty minutes, with the jump start the car started right up. We were only 30 miles from Palm Springs, and the damage to the battery was already done, so we proceeded. We stayed at the TravelLodge motel there, as it was inexpensive.

The next morning I called AAA again, and had them bring a fresh battery out, and I explained to the driver what had happened, so he put a volt meter across the battery while I ran the car. It was charging at over 17 volts, so my theory was correct. We drove over to NAPA auto parts, and they said the regulator would be in in the morning. This short time would not fry the new battery, so we drove to where the show would be held. Friday they were featuring American Graffitti, and had a big drive-in movie screen set up in the parking lot, with several of the actors on hand to sign autographs. The next day it would be Christine showing, with Alexandra Paul [Leigh], Malcolm Danare [Moochie Welch] and Bill Ostrander [Buddy Repperton] available to sign autographs. Martin was there with his surviving movie car, along with Mike Heredia, owner of a very nice Christine tribute car.

My camera died before the end of the event, but there are additional cool photos on the Retromania site. Photos to follow-

Malcolm Danare [Moochie] arrived on Friday, he must have been tired as he immediately asked if he could have a seat in my Fury-

The Kalifornia Dolls pin-up girls were a big hit!

Malcolm with the Wolfman Jack impersonator, who was quite talented, I might add.

A sneak peek at Martin's Moochie Chaser movie car, and Mike Heredia's beautiful Christine tribute-

Martin and Mike's '58's, with my '57 in the back-

K.I.T.T. showed up to enjoy the photo shoot-

Alexandra Paul [Leigh] posed with our cars-

Bill Ostrander [Buddy Repperton] with Alexandra and Malcolm-

A couple of the Kalifornia Dolls join in-

Malcolm getting quite a surprise as Christine comes to life!

Bill checking out Martin's car-

A '53 Chevy lead sled joined us both days, as did a drastically chopped Mercury-

Bill liked the swivel seats in the Fury-

Each of the three actors were nice enough to sign the underside of my trunk lid-

We all had a great time, and I really enjoyed meeting the actors, they are very nice folks and happy to answer your questions!
I and Damian headed home Sunday Morning, and had a nice, uneventful trip back, and Damian was off to school the next day to tell his friends.

That was the first time I had a regulator fail on this car, after nearly ten years on the road for me. I have had other tell me they needed regulator adjustments often, though. I was able to get a credit on my old battery as it was only a year old.

Thanks, Chrissy. You know what surprised me the most? All three of the actors were really personable follks, not the type that thinks they are better than you because they are famous. They were all willing to talk about the movie, and non-movie related things as well.

Those type of customs are very popular in this area, in fact, many of the nations top Kustom car builders live in the northern California area, some are customers of mine.

This last January I was involved in a minor collision, which damaged the left front fender and door. Luckily I carried good insurance that took care of the damage. Being I had a car torn down in my shop, my wife, who works for a quality body shop, suggested I talk to the owner about getting the car repainted. We made a deal where I would supply the parts, remove the glass and chrome, and the shop would repaint the entire car.

Stripped, and ready for the trip to the body shop-

Turning the bad event into good-
I've had a brand new windshield setting in a crate on my shop floor for many years, time to replace the original, delaminating windshield. Also, detailed dash and instrument cluster to make things nicer in the interior, along with new taillight and parklights, new aluminum side trim inserts that I made, and cleaned up the dusty seats.

All back together, will get a light polishing after the paint is totally cured.
