Hello there to all!

Im about to do a service on my 58 Plymouth Belv 318 and since its the first oil change ive done on her im not sure what grade of oil to use!!??
I have bought 15w 40 but some friends of mine think i should use 20w 50!?
The work shop manual says 20w 40 but i dont think that exists any more atleast not here in Australia!

Also where can i get hold of a correct air filter?
I bought a new 10 inch one but because it doesnt have the larger lip on one side it wont seal when i put the coverplate back on the top, so a gap is left!

Cheers Martin

The viscosity of the engine oil you use should be determined by the wear on the engine and the temerature it is going to operate in. New tight engines need thinner oil than engines with a lot of miles on them. It has a lot to do with bearing clearance and how easy it is for the oil to get past the rings and burn off. 10w 30 is a good choice unless youn engine has a lot of wear. A good way to gauge this is by how much oil the engine has used between oil changes if it has used any. You main cincern should be how clean is the inside of you engine. Years ago oils were non detergent and sludge builds up on the internal parts. If you switch to high detergent oil it can sometimes break up the sludge and give you problems. If the inside of you engine is clean "rocker arms will give you a good indication". I have never used a 50 weight oil in a engine in my life even for a oil burner. My current car has 128,000 miles on it and I only use 10W40.

Another tip-
Always be sure your motor oil has zinc present. Lots of the newer formulations have removed the zinc due to problems with O2 sensors and catalytic converters. Zinc is necessary for flat tappet engines like these, or the camshaft will wear out prematurely.

ZDDP [zinc] additive also works with common motor oils.
