Really sharp looking sport coupe! I think I saw that one on ebay a while back? I love the red/white interior. Wondering how you
liked the six cylinder and manual, transmission. What are your plans? Keep her as is?

Thanks Joe, I did buy this one off of e-bay back in July-August. I wasn't a big fan of white cars but I really liked the color on this one as well! This car was sand dune white with a green interior originally. I'm not sure about the drive train combo as it really wasn't running well at first so I haven't driven her much. Part of me would like a V8 with auto trans but on the other hand, I like the reliability of the three speed and the six cylinder engine, also I don't care for having to cut off and weld in new frame mounts to install an eight. This car is just for cruising so I don't need tons of power. Very Happy

Didn't that car come out of DeSoto Missouri? I looked at a car that was much like yours in Webster Groves Mo. It was red with white top back then. I talked to the guy in Webster Groves four times to set a time to come and look at it. He set the time at 4:30 , I had to kill time but went there at 4:20, and when I got there the guy from DeSoto was there . The owner sold it before I even got to look at the car. I knew the guy from DeSoto, He had just sold a 57 2dr. Ht on ebay a couple weeks before. I asked the guy from DeSoto ,why do you want it, you will just sell it anyway. He said no I'm not. The car was listed on craigslist for $3800. Six weeks later the new owner listed it on ebay for $21000. It didn't sell for that . But it did the third time he ran it.

This car did come from Desoto and the guys name was Russel. When did you run in to him? I first went to Missouri in late July and turned it down due to it having more issues than I expected but after a few weeks I offered to come back if he would accept a reduced price, he agreed so I returned in August. The car I bought looks like it was originally off white with turquoise side stripe and interior. Now it's bright white with red but the interior was done back in the late 80's. He had this car listed for $12,000 and I eventually got it for $11,500. I was never quite sure of the backstory on this one because his story seemed to change. Do you remember the details of the car you looked at? He also said that he sold a rough 2 door ht to a guy in New York for around $7000 before I bought this one.

Yes thats it his name is Russel Gulf . The car was red with white stripe and top. The guy in Webster Groves supposedly had the car for years, His two sons drove it to school for years. I think both guys were jerks .I had talked to the guy in webster four time about the car and it was only a few blocks from my daughters house. I had a hard time setting a time to see it ,but my grandson was graduating from webster high school the next day. I told the guy I was going to the graduation,he said okay be there at 4:30 , I had all day to kill, but finally went there at 4:20. Thats when I found the guy from DeSoto (Russel) there before me. The guy said I already sold it. Didn't offer any explanation or anything. I said I could have been there a lot earlier . The car had bad rust in the right rear quarter and some rust above head lights. The interior looked pretty good, it had those red seat covers on it. I was very disapointed . These cars are very few and when one came up I thought it was my chance of a life time.

Are you sure it was Gulf and not Clifton? If this is the same car I wouldn't be surprised. There is a lot of body filler in the rear and the trunk is patched up (not very well). This car was misrepresented in my opinion, it was stated to have a fresh frame on restoration with rust repair as needed and that it ran and drove good for a car that sat for 20 years. Well apparently his idea of rust repair was loads of filler and as for running, I could barely keep it running but I guess most cars that sit 20 years won't run at all so it was good in his opinion. It was these and a few other issues and his unwillingness to budge on the price that made me leave empty handed but as you stated, these cars are very hard to find and I finally realized that this was the best car I could find for the money so I went back, and I'm glad I did! It was after I came home that I felt I passed on my best chance to have one of these cars that wasn't a total wreck. I'm not looking for a show quality car and I'm not interested in doing a full blown restoration so in my opinion if she has bondo, I don't mind as long as it looks good. And as for the running and interior issues, those can all be addressed without too much trouble.

You are right his name was Clifton. He had a breath right strip on his nose. He does the body work and painting himself. I wouldn't think that would good for your breathing.

When I met him he said that he had c.o.p.d and was on oxygen. Too many years of doing bodywork and breathing dust. I looked at some of the paperwork I got with the car and have receipts that belonged to Walt and Peter Schuster of 24 Webster Woods, St. Louis, MO. Does that sound familiar?

The guy in webster never gave his name. He was an architect and lived across the street from a train depot. The pictures he posted on craigslist showed the car when his kids drove to school. But it didn't look like that now. He had sanded in several spots down to the metal. It needed a complete repaint.

It's a small world if this is indeed the same car! I'm sorry that you lost out on a chance to get a car you really wanted. I hate it when you want to obtain something that you will use and cherish and someone who's only looking to make a buck beats you to it. There is a guy near me who has a 58 2 dr ht that looks nice but he wants $30,000 or best offer and that is far more than I could afford.

I Thought my chance to get a 2 dr ht that wasn't total junk would be near impossible, then I stumbled across this car on e-bay. The first auction I saw, the starting price was $11,900 with no reserve. Not one person bid, so I told myself that if it came up again I'd bid $12,000 and no more. Well it came up again and I won! I really thought I would have been out bid at the last second. Even after walking away the first time, he relisted it again and it didn't sell, I guess It was meant to be.

Yep, I just looked at the copy of the title and the purchase date is the next day so it must be the same car. He must of had some serious pie in the sky hopes if he thought he was going to get $21,000. Like I said, I'm not surprised he gave you a load of bull, when I asked about details on the car he was inconsistent. I was curious to know what this car looked like before anything had been done. It's interesting to hear that it was red at one time, he even mentioned that if he painted it red it would have sold better. He was also planning on installing a 383 with an auto transmission but I'm glad that didn't happen because I can only imagine it probably would have been a horrible hack job of an installation.

Thanks Brian, it's a mighty flathead six! I'm kinda surprised that someone would order a "sport" coupe and splurge for the higher end trim but not opt for a V8.

Your welcome Chris Smile First time I noticed this.. I was curious do you plan at all in the future to slip a V8 into it? Or are you going the original route?

While I'd really like to have a V8, it's a major pain to change out the engine mounts to convert it. The frame mounts are welded in place, if they were bolt on mounts, I would certainly upgrade.
