But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:20

Years ago there were two old men laying in their hospital beds both knowing that the end was near. One was rich and the other was poor. The rich man had never given Christ a thought while the poor man was a strong believer in Jesus for many years. The rich man had a visitor one day and they were talking. The rich man said, "when I die I shall have to leave my riches". As he pointed over to the next bed where the poor man was lying he said, "on the other hand, he will go to his riches."

Thus in just a couple of sentences the rich man summed up the contrast between them. The man worth everything, in reality had nothing; the man with nothing had everything.

These two men were a vivid illustration of the story Jesus told about the Rich Man and Lazarus. There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Then he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.
Luke 16:19-26

Insight: Does that mean we must renounce everything we own? No, not unless God clearly commands us to do so. But it does mean we commit everything we have--including our lives--to Christ and put His will above everything else.

Prayer: Lord God...I pray that this vivid truth of the reality of death would resonate in my heart so that I may come to know You and Your Son Jesus intimately. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
