Most people who know me, know I love racing! Doesn't matter what kind, I watch it all. Back in 2008, at a Toy show, My son Matt and I saw these cool slot cars running and they were able to change lanes and do all kinds of cool stuff. Well I got the bug, bought a set and then it snow balled from there!

Our original set from Carrerra, $400.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Plywood, trim and grass paper $75.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The base.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Our first layout
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And naturally we had to buy more cars!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Lights and lane changing action.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

So after a year, that layout got a little boring and we changed it up and started working on some scenery
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This was the start to our Memorial park, kind of lame.

The first pit garage

So Another year goes by, and were bored again. Change up!!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Moved pit row.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And since it was now getting faster to race, added borders to control the chaos.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

But that didn't seem to help, We race pretty hard.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Into turn 1side by side is the worse!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

So, now it's 2010 and we finally have a good layout and some permanent scenery.

Turn 5 around the woods
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Fencing on the overpass and in front of the pits.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Walkover bridge
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The starting tower and some overhead advertisement signs.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Quick shot down pit road, now with 2 garages
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Still kind of bare in the infield,
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The pond on the back side started to grow

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And our Memorial Park expanded

So now it's 2012 and yeap! Were expanding!!!!

From the over pass to turn 5, we stretched it another 4 feet, added a chicane and banked the curve a bit.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Added another garage to pit row
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Paved and striped the parking lot, Pete needed a place for the PT Cruisers, LOL!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Expanded the pond with a waterfall.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Added a vendors section.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Picked up a new car and made a pop up for it since the garages are full
Only made 1 lap out of the box and ripped the rear wing off!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Then things got dangerous! Matt and I picked up these 2 Daytona Prototypes. They are wicked fast!!! We started mowing down trees and braking barriers. They got tuned down pretty quickly!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Of course, no track would be complete without a run off area and a tire wall. This was the main place most guys come off the track, so it just seemed to be the perfect spot

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And then I added some lights. Kind of dim, but racing in the dark is a lot of fun

Thanks Wayne, We race all winter long, even his friends have bought cars and controllers to join in.

I can't find the most recent pics for some reason. I will try to take more tonight and get them posted. A lot has been upgraded in the last year or so. Not to mention, the additional cars...

That is a cool track set-up! When I was a kid, they had a slot machine car race track downtown that was a lot of fun, if you didn't mind spending your allowance.

I've never done any 'real' racing. other than a few passes down a dragstrip years ago, or demo-derbies.

That's really cool! I wasn't sure if slot cars were still being made. I remember having the miniature cars and track as a kid but it was nothing like what you've got.

Thanks guys! It's been a lot of fun. I've been playing with slot cars since I was 7. But back then I had Tyco and AFX cars. When Matt was little I pulled them out and we had them flying all over the place.

John, there used to be a few slot car tracks around here. I used to race at one years ago. But life got into the way and I had to stop.
Yeah, I never did any real racing either, just a few passes at Lancaster during amateur nights.

Chris, They make a lot of new cars. All different scales as well. Both Analog and digital, only thing is they get expensive fast!!!! My cars start at $60 each.

Joe, I keep at it. It's my winter project, seeing as I can't work on the car when it's cold. LOL!

What did you use to edge the board Dave? Is that a precut trim? I could use some for my train board. Smile

Wayne, I used that paper wrapped foam edging sold at Home Depot. It's like $4 a 8' section, and since I carved up a few sections of it, it's cheap enough to replace

This is how she looks today. I couldn't find pics from last year, so I took some tonight.

Last December, the power went out and in less than an hour, the basement flooded. So I had to make the track self standing. Prior to this it was resting on my printer cart, the fooseball table, the back of the couch a concrete slab and one of my old Fiero seats.

I ran 2"X4"s the length of the track and also made stands for each end and the middle. I tied them all together and made angled supports. The track has never been stiffer.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And I built it high enough so that the Fooseball table can slide out from underneath.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The woods are filling in, I added restrooms and a first aid/ security shack

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Expanded the infield vendors area. Added a timing tower and more to the tire wall. Plan to put a grandstand here someday
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Cleaned up the starting grid a bit.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The paddock area is starting to look more like a car show. I need to black it out.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

My Ferrari's on pit row
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Last year I built the VIP Tower extentions on top of the existing put garages

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And of course, what track would be complete without the Good Year Blimp floating above?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

My plan is to eventually hide a camera behind it and put a 4" screen someplace to make it look like a jumbotron showing live action.

And of course, we always have an audience whenever we race.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And yes, I have lots of racing stuff. The rafters are getting full!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This what I look up to when I'm sitting at my desk. There are more rafters that are full before and after the ones you can see in this picture

Hey Dave...Thanks for posting all the photos and sharing your fun with us. What a great hobby you have there to enjoy with your son. I'm really impressed at what a great job you've done and how much your layout has grown. Wow! That's fantastic! Keep up the great work. You are not only building your race track and fun together... but you're building memories for your son...for a lifetime.  cheers

Bob

Bob, Thank you. I find it more than just a hobby. See I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs. I learned long time ago that that was wrong, being raised by an alcoholic father, and I didn't want that for my son. I decided that getting involved in a family type hobby was the best way to instill good ethics in him.

That being said, I chose cars as my "drug", it kept me out of trouble for the most part. I took him to car shows since he was in diapers, so I kind of steered him into that direction. He's been a good kid so far, Drives me nuts most of the time, but a good kid nine the less.

So many memories in the last 22 years, both at home and elsewhere
