PostSubject: COMPARISON, THE THIEF OF JOY   Sun Mar 23, 2014 9:40 am

"We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise."
(2 CORINTHIANS 10:12)

I saw a mantelpiece once with these words inscribed on it: "Comparison is the thief of joy." That's exactly right. All I have to do is compare myself to my best friend who's getting married soon, to a co-worker who's climbing the ladder of corporate success, to a friend that just seems to have the greatest life "and everything he touches seems to turn to gold". It might be something simple as not being able to find or afford a certain classic car that my friend or neighbor owns! Any of these things can quickly make me grow unhappy...or dissatisfied with my life. Have you ever experienced this feeling?

The Apostle Paul spoke to this universal tendency of people to compare themselves with others. He said it was not wise. Instead of dwelling on how "the grass is always greener", we should be focused on how good our Creator is, how much He loves us...to the extreme of dying in our place on the cross at Calvary. We should be focused on being thankful for what the He has already given us. We should look forward to the day when we will meet Him face to face...and our goal should be to hear Him say "well done good and faithful servant" and then enter into eternal life with Jesus in heaven forever.

Do you want to have "life to the full" as Jesus has promised to all His followers? Then "trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:3-4). And whatever you do, resist letting comparisons and envy rob you of joy. There is no use chasing after what others have when Christ has given you what you need: HIM.

Insight: If there would be anything to boast about at all, let it be that we would boast in Christ our Lord.

Prayer: Dear Lord, Help me to take this message to heart. I want to live my life to please You...so that my joy would be complete. Help me to resist the temptation to compare myself to others. I do not want my joy to be stolen. In Jesus' Name, Amen

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

You're welcome Chris...and I thank you for replying with such humility. I am blessed as your comment reminds of this verse.

When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
   but with humility comes wisdom.
  Proverbs 11:2
