Has anyone here converted a 57 or 58 six cylinder car to a v8?

Welcome to the club.  welcome

Where I come from a "Mula" is a stubborn crossbreed between a horse and a donkey! (Sorry...it's the Italian in me! LOL!)  lol!

If you are in fact "stubborn" like your name suggests that's a good thing. You'll need to be as converting a 6 cyl car to a V8 is no easy feat. Aside from setting up the motor mounts there may be some interference with the crossmember if I recall correctly. As for the transmission you wont be able to use the pushbutton setup. Are you running a stock rear end or changing it out? You can customize the transmission mount without to much difficulty.

First thing you will need are the frame engine perches from a V-8 car. The six cylinder ones cannot be made to work.

I will probably have to get my welding skills out of the closet and fab up since my motor mounts are from a 74 RV. Rear end will have to be upgraded to handle the extra power. I read somewhere E body rear ends may be a bolt-in. Getting the right gear ratio is also on the list of things to consider.

E-body rears are a popular changeover, some people use C-body ones, but you have to check the pinion angle, and shims may be necessary to get it right.

could you fit a 440 into a V6 car or would it not fit. i have seen some one on YouTube named bad58mike1 had a company or something put a 440 into his already V8 Plymouth. i was just wondering if it is hard to put a 440 into a V6 car yourself or just have some company do it.
i need to know because i have found i perfect car to be turned into christine but it has a v6 and was thinking about driving on 6 cylinders for awhile until i have the money to put a 440 into it. im not sure if i should buy the car because it might be impossble to put a v8 into it.

Sean, do you know how much you sound like me right now?
I too have found my own perfect Christine car, and she too has a V6.
Only she's a '58 Savoy 4-door sedan. But I don't care about the extra doors and being a sedan, she's still very perfect for me.

But again, she does have the V6.
I was also thinking about putting a 440 into her when I get enough money saved up. But until then, I will tune up the V6 and drive that around for a while.
Cause me, I like more horsepower. Laughing

I had a 392 into a 57 with a 318. That was basically a bolt in swap. To put a V8 into a 57-59 six frame you will need the frame perches as mentioned above. Yes, you will have to do some welding. Also the torsion bars on the six will have to be changed for a decent suspension. If you can find them go with s/w bars and rear springs.

1957-1959 v8 perches from a a Plymouth or Dodge and maybe a Desoto too will work. Then mounts (Metal cylinders) from a big block- (350,361,383-(from 1959), -car from the same years for the engine side. Then some new rubber insulators too. I would bet there are big block mounting kits with modern 'spool' style mounting out there too. A cable shifted 727 Automatic transmission will be needed to use your 5 button shifter. A cable may be needed from Imperial Services. com. Fury/1957 Hemi Torsion bars will work too! Firm Feel. com may make them also! Oh, and your cars have/had straight sixes in them. Marc.

Not only are these straight sixes but they are also flathead sixes Wink  Kind of strange seeing a flathead six in a car that was suppose to be ahead of its time. But it sounds like they were reliable. But I would bet most replace them to a V8 in time. I know I probably would change it! Smile

Here is a couple parts you will need:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1957-1959-Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth-V-8-Left-or-Right-Engine-Mount-/331664065848?hash=item4d38b80538:g:qUsAAOSwVL1WBF3h&vxp=mtr

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-mopar-1957-1958-1959-Dodge-Plymouth-361-Engine-Mount-Bracket-1828234-/321883150041?hash=item4af1bb16d9:g:FsUAAOSwv0tVNVrN&vxp=mtr

Maybe Big m has some use ones and stand offs for the frame portion.

Sean, If your dad is a mechanic then that will help you out a lot. Being 18 makes things hard when you have very little funds. So maybe your dad will help out with that as well. Who knows maybe he will enjoy it a lot and help out more then you expect! These cars are just that fun to have. Smile

Good luck my friend.
