PostSubject: Interior door handles and window crank   Tue Jan 03, 2012 12:40 pm

I was just starting to tear down my car. Tried to remove inner handles as I thought they were pinned on. Low and behold, they are not. Is there a special tool used to remove them. Im guessing there must be some sort of internal ring inside the handle and around the square shaft. Am I wrong?

You are right. There is a small square clip that holds the handles on. There is a spedcial tool required to remove these but with care and knowledge of the part I have succefully removed these using a standard winder removing tool. I dont have any images of the tool or the clip but Im sure someone here would.

Well done Sir Robert of PLYMOUTHSVILLE.........The part you need to push on is the
square clip on the handle......you need to push the section at the bottom(6 oclock in the photo) to remove the handle.......window winders are the same.

Wow! Thnxs guys but looking at the pic of the square inside of the handle, is there something inside the square like u say at the bottom. To me it looks like the top piece would have to move up? If Im wrong, where is it possible to purchase one of these tools or could I get inside with a 90 degree o ring pick?

A slightly bent butter knife will work on this as well as a bent chinese screwdriver.

I have a pair of pliers for removing the handles, but it is nearly an antique, and probably not available any longer.

Here's a photo of the one that I use. I bought it off either the Mac or Snap-on tool truck during my first years as working as a mechanic. I believe the maker of these pliers was Lisle tool company.

You just slide the tool in, squeeze the handles, and pull.

Well, I must say, my hat goes off to all you people. I have been in the autobody trade for years and wasnt expecting a clip like that. Without your knowledge, I would still be prying and pulling. I have gotten my handle off and see exactly what is going on behind it. I think I may either build one that Chrissy shows by the plan, (thank you) or just modify my clip remover by welding in the most narrow section and adding a little ledge. This site is awesome. Somewhere I can go to when I need help on my car. Thanks again everyone.

Would love to see how it comes out. Looks like it would be a safer tool to use around the new door panels later.

Yea Crisy I know I don't need to tell you this but make sure you get all the slags out of it. Don't want you to be scratching up some of your beautiful door panels. Smile

I had two VA appointments the last couple of days but I finished it. The top where I filed the brazing is a little ratty but I didn't think it was necesssary to make it look like diamonds. It matches the dimentions and will do the job.
