I'm curious how many enthusiasts out there like these cars for more than just their styling. What do they represent to you? Is there more to it than just a movie or the braggin rights of owning one?

Although I do not own one and I like cars of all years, I find them appealing for their curved body lines. That's why I love the Monte Carlos so much, The curved body lines add class.

Great answers Gents! For me it's a bit more than that. I suppose you could say it's a way for me to try and experience a very small piece of what life was like in those days. It's a means of time travel if you will. America was at her best back then. Post WWII America. A man could truly reap the benefits of his own labor, provide for his family and breathe easy. Morals and values of the highest standard were a part of every day life. I guess you could say I'm reaching back for something we've lost. It was a time when things were a lot simpler and an overwhelming sense of optimism reigned as our nations general sentiment. Who knows, maybe I've just seen to many Norman Rockwell paintings. Wink

My dad's first brand new car was a '57 Plaza 2-door sedan, I was brought home from the hospital in it, and remember riding in it with my sister. This was in Michigan, though, so after the car was five or six years old, it completely rusted away from the road salt.

I've always owned and drove '50's cars since the seventies.

I can't say I exactly remember the golden era, a happy, prosperous time for America, which I define as around 1937 to 1967, but I am old enough to have seen it ride (drive?) off into the sunset, from around 1968 to 1972. Contrary to bad depictions, the '60s weren't all hippies, etc. I remember my dad having short hair and thin ties like mine now, '60s cars on the road (the first cars I remember were our family ones, 1967 Fords, a Galaxie wagon and a T-Bird), and Ed Sullivan and shows like "Petticoat Junction" on the air (and bad stuff such as cigarette commercials). I saw the transition to the '70s, rather like depicted on "The Brady Bunch," which I remember on the air one night a week. That's when "the Sixties" (the hippie-ish stuff, roughly meaning "in college from 1968 to 1972") took over Middle America.

Been chasing the old America ever since, for 40 years.

Then a few years ago, stylewise (clothes and accessories: the suits, the eyeglasses, the fedoras, and the casual wear), I "went back in time" four years ago. (Easy now thanks to both flea markets and eBay.) Because I realized, like the old joke about dogs, I can.

It's not about camp or irony; it's a conservative statement. "Mad Men" was just a neat coincidence, though I do watch it for style pointers.

Ironically, Christine sort of makes fun of nostalgic folks like me, a deadpan satire of revivals such as Sha Na Na (Leigh: "I hate rock and roll") and "Happy Days" (good only its first season): "Arnold Cunningham"! But when I see Christine's power, I see the old America fighting back, trying to come back, with a vengeance.

That's what the old cars mean to me. So off to the car shows I go, every season.

Having a classic car is on my dream list.

I like them because of design and horse power. Can thank my dad. Plus we go to lots of car shows that are close by. Love muscle cars. Yes made by Plymouth too. Sad it's cold so no more car shows til Memorial Day weekend for Musclepalooza. It's at Lebanon ny. Huge drag racing and car show. My dad and I go every year if the weather is nice. So like Keith Gordon I love car shows too. cheers

I like the 57 and 58 because they do have very nice lines. And the fact they are American iron. Where people and the company took a little pride in there work. But out of the fin type cars I think Plymouth nailed it. But did the movie play apart in me wanting one.. yep! With out the movie I wouldn't of noticed how cool these cars really are.

I can take or leave '55-'57 Chevys. My family drove Fords (my parents were married in '55; their first car was "Charlie," a '41 Ford) and my dad thought the '57 Chevy was ugly at the time. I agree with Stephen King, on writing Christine: he wanted a beautiful '50s car that DIDN'T have a cult of nostalgia around it like the (I love them) '49-'51 Mercurys (lead sleds) or the '55-'57 Chevy Bel Airs.

I think the whole board will agree with me that '58 was the best model year all around, and Chrysler (Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, and DeSoto) nailed the styling from '57 to '60. Besides Chrysler's "forward look" there were the great '58 Chevys (the first Impala, the Bel Air, and the no-frills Biscayne), the Pontiac Bonneville, and the Studebaker President (very forward-look; a near-Christine). Chrysler goofed up the styling in '61 with a weird grille and headlight configuration; those cars are butterfaces (beautiful "but her face"). Also, the Edsel gets an undeserved bad rap (actually one of the better-looking '58 Fords); I love the tweaked styling for '59. (The '60 Fords, including the last Edsel, weren't pretty.)

Another favorite I'd love to have: a '60 Chevy Impala bubbletop, preferably a dignified executive's light metallic blue.

Funny as a kid I collected lots of 57 Chevys. Lol even have this huge one with flames. Too bad it wasn't a Fury or Belvedere. Car was really cool. Still have it somewhere.

It's funny how these cars were pretty much ignored and forgotten early on but then Christine comes out and all of the sudden 57-58 plymouths became hot property and have remained desirable 30 years after the movie was made.

Like the story of the white '58 Impala in American Graffiti (I have a 1:18 diecast, one of two such Impalas; the movie one's a gift): after filming they tried to sell it but nobody wanted it. It went for a few hundred bucks! It's still with us, privately owned, making the show circuit.

Isnt this the truth!! Can you imagine what will happen if a sequel comes out! Anything and everything will be scarfed up! Rust buckets and all. Parts that we once looked over as being to far gone will be picked up like gold. It reminds me of the movie Gone in 60 Seconds. Eleanor. After that movie you couldn't find a mustang fastback for a reasonable price ha ha ..

We had a clone of the american graffiti 58 at our show in 2011. In at the 5:53 mark or so...

Still, I'm with you guys when it comes to the body lines and incredible fins on the 58 Plymouth. I loved 50's cars and for years my favorite was the 57 chevy bel air 2 door hardtop. Then I saw Christine and my eyes about popped out when I saw what "finned perfection" looked like! Smile

Thanks for the video! The movie Impala doesn't have the badge on the hood. Carlisle is three hours away from me so I haven't been there yet. Fun fact: the actual car doesn't have the engine that Toad describes in the movie; my diecast does.
