He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? MARK 4:40

I always thought that the opposite of faith was doubt. If I had doubts, I worried I was losing my faith but after reading today's Bible verse I'm reconsidering. Perhaps the opposite is fear? After thinking about it, I also considered this. Children don't doubt. They have fear. Perhaps this does not change at all as we mature?

In Mark 4, the Bible tells of the time when the disciples are panicking and Jesus is napping as a storm picks up and begins ravaging the boat they're in. As they desperately wake Him, He promptly tells the wind and the waves to "be still." Creation recognized the voice of its Creator, and it obeyed. The waves listen to Him because He made them. And then Jesus asks His disciples this: "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" His question puts fear rather than doubt up against faith.

Fear reveals my faith and it reflects poorly on my Father because I am acting as though He isn't kind or in control or doesn't know enough to help me. God's gift to all of us is His assurance that though the journey is not always smooth, our safe arrival is already taken care of in Christ. Let this promise dissolve your fear and grow your faith.

Insight: Think about what's in the way of your faith in God. Especially for what He has done for you personally, to lead you to believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. It is a fact that He died for you...in your place on the cross at Calvary. Just as sure as we are all going to die, it is sure that we are all sinners and need to be saved. Are you saved and on your way to heaven? Have you received Christ as your Lord and Savior? Are you afraid to because you're thinking that you'll have to make some changes? Don't be afraid...He wants you to come just as you are...and He will do the rest.

Dear Lord, Help me to seriously think about this devotion. Help me to consider what's holding me back from You. In Jesus' Name, Amen

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
