Here is a Popcorn machine I restored awhile back. 1956 and it works on a dime. Pops a fresh bag each time!

That is an awesome job on the restoration of a rare machine!!

When I was a little kid growing up in southern Michigan, our neighborhood drug store had a soda fountain where the local high school kids hung out after school, and they had a popcorn machine something like this near the entrance. I remember my folks buying me and my sister a bag of popcorn several times when we were young.

Sometime around 1968 or '69, the store got a liquor license, and they remodeled, taking out the soda counter and replacing it with liquor shelves. I remember the popcorn machine and some of the stuff from the soda fountain sat behind the building for several years before disappearing. Wish I had the foresight to have gathered all that stuff up, but certainly my parents would not have allowed it.

Thanks everyone for the comments! Smile When I did the restoration I paid close attention to detail on everything possible. For those of you that have never seen these in operation I must tell you they are very fascinating to watch as they make a bag of popcorn. This is when the USA had some true inventions and vending machines were at there height in the industry. I will check and see if I can find a video of these machines in operation. Its cool to watch!
Cheers! Very Happy

Brian.

The maintenance isn't to bad. But you do have to clean the machine every so often. Clean the kettle and give the drive motors a little shot of oil. Out of the ones I have they all were pretty filthy with years of caked on popcorn oil. That is very hard to get off. The most common problems is the failure of a heating element burning out. Which 9 times out of ten is a result of a bad thermostat that has stuck on. So once the element burns out most of these machines were then tossed out. So that is the main reason you don't see many of these left around. Anytime I ran across one weather it was complete or just a parts machine I bought them. There just that rare. Smile

Thank you for posting that video Brian. My wife and I watched it...makes us realize what's been lost here in the 21st century. We are in an extremely busy, distracting, chaotic throw-away society now...loaded with electronic gadgetry that steals our personalities. The coolness of the 50'-60's are long gone. I'm glad you have saved a great piece of memorabilia from that time Brian.

Try to have a meaningful conversation with somebody today. If the other's face isn't down...staring into a little rectangular boob tube...just wait a moment. This very addictive time-stealer will ring in one of an endless variety of tunes...and be up to their ear momentarily so they can yap away about meaningless garb...sometimes in the middle of a busy grocery store. The other day I had to kindly ask sometime to refrain from shouting into their I-phone for an extended period of time in the local gym. I still don't own an I-phone and vow to never get one. Rant completed Embarassed

Thank you again Brian. You have helped me to escape this madness by enjoying a bit of "the simpler times" that we once had. It was very enjoyable.

Bob

Thank you very much Bob Smile Ive got a few of these machines that im going to restore. Anytime I would run across one I would end up buying it. Anything mechanical from that time frame fascinates me. Not to mention its that time where we had inventiveness. Times were much simpler then. Not at all like it is today. People don't take the time to just take in the simple things of life. We are way to of a high speed society now. Everytime I watch the machine pop a bag of popcorn I still get that little grin on my face.. Very Happy And when the kids all gather around it they watch it like a video game. It makes me feel good to share things that are long gone now.
