Thanks again. Very kind.

One more thing: I put Future acrylic floor polish on the right door where the paint had lost its gloss. Oil-based paint reacting to the natural oil on your fingers when handling the model; missed that spot when I sprayed the second coat on the body. (Why serious modelers use an airbrush.) Now I know why classic-car shows have "don't touch" signs on all the cars. The Future bunched up a bit (drip) at the bottom and started to turn white! Good thing it's water-soluble; better than oil-based stuff that makes things worse. Fixed it with a brush. Enamel paint is nasty; only OK for small pieces, with a brush (thin coat drying quickly). If I build another model, I'll go with acrylics, primer, and lacquer.

Very true Serge, Up here we are like chopper central! That and a bunch of C130s. Smile

We got them too Smile 133rd Airlift Wing Air National Guard. The NG pretty much is into everything. We always joke about the add being a weekend warrior only because its just a myth. More like active guard..lol.. Just like the regular Army or any branch of the military. Air Guard does have some Air Force personnel though that are with the Air Guard. One could say its all about cross training so we as a nation are better prepared. After 911 we found out how much we weren't .

OK; thanks. I meant that the C-130s, being big planes, aren't part of "Team Army" including the original NG but rather "Team Air Force" including the Air Guard. Borrowing Coastie lingo: "Team Coast Guard" means Regular USCG, the Reserve, and their civilian Auxiliary (boat owners doing safety checks, etc.). So "Team Air Force" includes their auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol (volunteer civilian pilots doing non-combat stuff), as well as Regular, the Reserve, and the Air Guard of course.

I added some "spaghetti," mostly the spark-plug wires and wiper-fluid hose, to her engine. As you can see, AMT/Round 2 only reissued their Belvedere kit, marking it up by tying it into the movie. (20/20 hindsight: you can get the same kit for as low as $4 plus shipping off eBay, as the plain old Belvedere.) The air cleaner may look a little out of whack but hey, it doesn't match the movie car anyway.

Was the Mopar wiper-fluid bag yellow for '58?

PostSubject: The guardian of the car key   Sun Mar 15, 2015 8:03 pm

Now sporting vintage Pennsylvania plates (after all, she has a stock Belvedere engine, not the movie car's), little Christine is parked on my pre-war Zenith radio, guarding the key to my 1:1 Japanese piece of plastic (like little Christine, heh) and sheet metal; someday it will be the key to a classic. (When I get the classic car, a working old TV with a converter to work today, a hi-fi and records, and maybe even a postwar house and furnish it completely, I'll reach my goal of living 50% in the '50s-'60s. Now I'd say it's 25-30%.) Clearcoated the roof again trying to fix the finish, a semi-success.

Let's try that again. Another kit, from the beginning. Because I'm insane.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I'd just sanded off the "Made in China" lettering.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The speedo and several dials are decals. Of course the radio glows green.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The instructions don't tell you how to make the wheels spin; by the time I figured it out, it was too late. But I did figure out how to make the front wheels steerable.

The roof trim has some issues because paint collected on it as I was spray-painting the roof, and sanding didn't do the trick. Still, hooray for Tamiya spray paint and Bare-Metal foil.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I made the reverse light out of a scrap piece of clear plastic with a blade and my trusty emery-board sander.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Bought a box of parts with two air cleaners the right size and sanded them into shape.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Build time including repainting: just under five days.

Thanks. It takes a lot of time to do right, plus supplies cost. I won't be building many, but I actually go into an altered state of consciousness, commonly called spacing out, when I work on this stuff. Or maybe it's the opposite of spacing out; I zero in on the task and everything else fades far into the background. Rather like Arnie's obsession. Re-creating the cars is magical when it works. Maybe someday I'll learn how to channel that into a real car; now my goal is to get a driveable favorite classic.

Just filed down and re-chromed the roof trim and added some spaghetti under the hood. She's still the guardian of the car key in my bedroom while my stock Fury is on the shelf above my desk.

Third time's the charm (2½ anyway): at the Medford car show I got another kit for $18 (vs. $30s retail) and replaced the windows and half the wheel parts on my best model. Filed down and re-chromed most of the roof frame too. Popped off the body and put it back on. You have to stare at the instructions a bit to figure out how to do the mechanics (they don't tell you how): making the wheels movable (got to have moving wheels; hello, she's a car!) as well as making the front wheels poseable/steerable, which I learned last time. (File down the wheel retainers, then slip them on the axles and melt the ends of the axles with a heated knife blade; then slip on the tie rod and secure it the same way, melting its holding pins.) Now Little Christine does all of that. (Bigger Christine with the working headlights is in another room.) Oh, and I put in the glossy print of the dash somebody sells on eBay. Even has the Plymouth name on it. About as good as I can make that kit so at last I'm pretty happy with it.

Another round of photos: in the spotlight, namely sunlight, as harshly honest as any show judge:

She looks great Serge! If buying the extra kit makes you happy by fixing all that was wrong with the first go-around, of course...it's well worth it! Plus look at it this way...now you have a parts car too. Wink
