PostSubject: Dual Quad Air Filter Elements   Sat Nov 29, 2014 3:35 am

I finished my little „58-Fury- & Movie Style“ dual quad aircleaner conversion project - except the final assembly as the filter elements are missing yet.
Before I had simple aircleaners from Mr. Gasket, looking nice but not that nice as the 58 Fury ovals.

Got advice to use K&N E-1957, MOPAR 1739546, NAPA 2030 or WIX 42030 -> available on market, but all wrong. The shape is correct, but they are too high. They were used for the 1957 side mounted air cleaners.

Mopar 1852569, AC A84C, WIX DT42, FRAM A163PL, Purolator AFP15, WIX 42042 -> would be all correct, but not available any more!

As I found out, there are only 2 sources left who sell the correct filters:

Gary Goers, $44. Unfortunately, I have an order running since 3 months now. There is no reaction from Gary any more. Tried several ways contacting him with no reply. I heard that email or fax has become useless in dealing with him. The only way left ordering from him is sending it via post, including a cheque. Not knowing if he will ever fill the order - no way.

Atlas Obsolete, $120. Pretty pricey for a set of air cleaners!

I remember there was a thread on this forum with an advice how to make oval filters from round ones. I should have saved it, now I can´t find it any more. Can anyone help?

Those look great Andy! That sucks about non availability of filters. I guess squashing a round one into an oval might be the best bang for your buck. There is a thread on the dual carb filters in the engine, exhaust, fuel, ignition section that mentions a Purolator element #A30059 as a suitable replacement.

Good eye Chris! I'll make that thread a sticky for easy reference.

Thanks, Chris! This is the thread I was looking for!

Neither my covers are original, nor the bases. The covers are the fiberglass ones Manos makes. They are coated with a special chrome coat. The bases are build to fit Edelbrocks. So they don´t have that border the original ones have. When I use the Purolator filters I will have to find a way to fit them to shape and keep them oval!

Wow Andy! How did you pull off the chrome? Looks indistinguishable from regular chromed metal! I'm beyond impressed! Smile

My plan was to do the same but enlarge the openings in the bases. Mike Burke's metal reproductions are nice but pricey.

Wayne, the chrome coating is a special spray painting method. It is not very common yet but I think there is big potential. There is still skepticism about resistance and application on big, exposed parts like bumpers. Of course galvanic chroming is still the best method, but you need a perfect smooth steel surface for success.

There is a very strong clearcoat on the mirror coating. The manufacturer (http://coverchrome.com/en) has gone to great lengths to try out the material thoroughly.
Here´s an interesting video about the same method: http://tune.pk/video/3269993/spray-on-chrome-jay-leno-garage

I´m sure we will soon see the first fiberglass bumper wings getting applied by that method.

As my grill and bezel and eyebrows got pale and scratched over time, I gave these parts away for coating to an „anodized aluminium effect“ at the moment, which is also possible.

Those air cleaners look fabulous Andy...great info. on this spray chroming too! Sure would be nice to have a viable alternative to the age old chrome plating process.

Hope you can find reasonable filters...

Bob

I think it´s also Atlas behind this seller. Same description, same photos. I asked, and they answered: "This listing is for 1962-65 cars. I have the ones you need I think you have the dual 4-BBL? Fresh in stock and going fast for $128 a set"
I think the photos are wrong. Mopar part 1851493 looks different http://www.nicksgarage.com/aircleaner.htm

Anyway, I got an answer from Gary yesterday. He just came back from a long holiday trip and is sorting hundreds of orders.

Glad you heard from Gary. I just received a small order I made back in July. Smile
