Jacked the Belvy up today, turned to the extremes several times with motor running. Nothing unusual happened. Brought car back down on all fours and took it out in the driveway but still had no Power Steering. Put the car in neutral and turned to the extremes while revving the engine a bit...Both times when I turned to each extreme, I got a prolonged squeal out of the Power Steering belt like all of a sudden the pump kicked in. I now had Power Steering when revving engine but still no power steering at idle. Definitely some progress...perhaps there's still air in the system?

Well Bob, To me it sounds like you still have air in the system. Sometimes it takes a good drive too work it all out. But as the air does work out watch your level. You will have too add more im sure Smile I just flush my whole power steering system in my little ford ranger. It took a long time too get the air out of it after I did that. Good luck with it my friend Smile

Well, Green Christine is very happy with a nice set of wide whites and...some shiny Hollywood Flippers too!

Unfortunately...

There's a HUGE white

and burgundy, Big Finned

DeSoto sitting in the garage

and he is not very happy at all.

Says "he feels like a parts car."

Now looking to replace his stolen rubber!.. Wink

Hi Bob!
I am very happy to hear that you finally got new tires and wheels for your Green Christine! Very Happy Green Christine looks wonderful! Very Happy
I wish you good luck finding new tires for your DeSoto as well. Very Happy
I liked the bit of humor there from your DeSoto... lol!
I hope the DeSoto isn't too mad at Green Christine meaning that I hope your 2 cars are friends- I wouldn't want you to say back that the 2 cars had a fight started by the DeSoto over who gets the new shiny wheels/tires. :Evil Laugh: lol! Very Happy

Thanks Jackie...Chris and Joe.

To answer your question Joe, The car drives much smoother now. It was a pretty bumpy ride there towards the end with those old Sears 215/75r14 Guardsman 1" whitewall radials. Broken belts do not make for good ride!

To explain why I made this decision and...to make a very long story...still long... Laughing  the 225/75r14's (27.3" tall) on the DeSoto were too small for the car anyways. When new, the DeSoto Firesweep came with 800-14 tires (28.67" tall). The 225's are much closer to the original tire size of the Belvedere (750-14 = 27.68"), so stealing them made good sense. I didn't steal the wheels though...had the tires dismounted and mounted on the Belv's rims. So these tires are MUCH less undersized now...vast improvement over the 215/75r14's (26.7" tall) that were on there.

Now I'm looking for new rubber for the Desoto which proves to be even more challenging because there is nothing out there in a radial that matches the size of an 800-14...So basically I "solved" one issue only to have an even more difficult issue to solve now.

From what I hear, the Good Year 800-14 Super Cushion is the closest tire out there to factory original but of course that's a bias ply tire. I know John (Big M) selected these for his newly restored 59...I'd love to hear how his cross country trip went and how these tires ride/handle. I know the ride will not equal what I had in the 225/75r14's. American Classic Tire Co. is the ONLY company that offers a 235/75r14 at $277 each! But...the width of the 235 will probably cause an interference on a hard left turn. I looked under the DeSoto before I removed the 225's and it was very close to hitting the frame! Plus...the 235 tire is still .8" smaller in diameter than the original 800-14 (27.87" vs. 28.67" on the 800-14).

A tough decision lies ahead for me to get the right rubber on the Desoto. I'm leaning toward the Good Year right now but still not ready to commit. $900 to get tires...and still not be happy? Or $1100 to have a tire that rubs on the frame and is still undersized? I don't know Joe?? All of us have these decisions to make if we want to keep the original 14" wheels and original wheel covers. I really don't like the look of undersized tires...on any car.  Rolling Eyes

Bob

Yes, Bob, I know what you mean about the look of undersized tires- I don't like the look either. To me, the look of undersized tires just looks plain weird- it makes the car look either too big or the tires too small.
It seems like a very tough decision for you with the tires- if it was me, I would be like you and want to keep the original wheels, I like the look of original. Man, my mind is already mind-blown thinking about this very tough decision!
To try to help you out Bob- if it was me, I would ask John (Big M) about how the tires worked out for his '59. Maybe he can help you out?
I wish you the best of luck...Very Happy

I forgot to update this thread! I wound up buying 800-14 Goodyear Custom Super Cushions for my DeSoto. Bought them in September and drove on them a few hundred miles before putting the car away for the winter. I'm very pleased with the ride. Very smooth...l almost couldn't tell the difference, except while turning. It's definitely a heavy car! So now...no more "flooring it" around the corners! lol!

Wayne...I'm getting pretty good at this "host an image/insert image" tool you have provided for us. Very nice...and very convenient. Thanks...Bob

Very nice Bob! Very Happy
The DeSoto looks good with her new wide whites. Also, those are cool looking hubcaps the Desoto has.
She's a nice looking Desoto, also Green Christine looks good too. Very Happy

Glad to hear that the tires provide a nice smooth ride. Very Happy Are they radials?

Yeah, gotta take it easy around the corners on these big cars...
The ride is all very fun in these cool classics until you take a corner too fast and the big car starts swaying the opposite direction as you're going around the corner fast! :affraid:
Believe me, I know. Been there- done that. Not fun! At least you learn from your mistakes. Smile
I had it happen in the '59 Chevy. Took the corner too fast, and like usual, the big car starts swaying the opposite direction. :affraid:

Yeah, these big cars aren't NASCAR cars where you can go flying around the corner at 200mph and think that nothing will happen! lol!

The car looks great. Seems like you only have minor issues. That's great. Are you going to keep the 318 or trade up to something bigger? 57 years ago I learned to drive using a '58 Plymouth. Brings back memories. Best of luck.

Thanks John... Smile

Thanks Jackie...The 800-14 Good Year Custom Super Cushions that I just bought for the DeSoto are bias ply tires; correct (original) size...and from what I've heard, most likely what came on the car when new. I expected a harder ride with them because I had 225/75r-14 Diamondback radials on the car previously, which are now on the Belvedere. The Diamondback radials are much closer in O.D. to the Belvy's correct (original) size (750-14), so it made good sense.

Thanks Ron, I'd like to find a beat-up rusty 58-59 Chrysler or DeSoto 4 door sedan with an original big block and torqueflite tranny that still runs good...reasonably close to home. I've been looking but nothing has popped up yet. It would be good to upgrade to a big block and at the same time, get the proper transmission for the car. This way I could get the parking brake on the output shaft as well. Green Christine has no parking brake/emergency brake right now. Kind of nerve-wracking to think about the (single reservoir) master cylinder failing with this scenario.

Bob

You're welcome Bob. Smile
Oh. Nice though that they are more "factory correct".
It's amazing how you can get the same tires as what was on the car when new in '58 and how it's 2015 now. Very Happy
I personally prefer radials because of the better ride you get with them. It's why I was guessing they were radials earlier because how you said you got a nice smooth ride with them. But it's really nice that these tires that you got did actually provide a nice smooth ride even though that they are bias-ply tires. Very Happy
Yeah, does make good sense with why you swapped the DeSoto's previous tires onto the Belvedere. Smile

Took GC out cruisin' the other night...thought this was worthy of a few photos and it took place without any planning. I backed in (yes, I backed in...Reverse has magically started working again after engine warms up. It's the second time in a row since I installed longer shift cable, adjusted bands, changed transmission filter and fluid) then the 57 Chevy arrived a little while after...then the 59 Ford after that. Thought a 57 Chevy, 58 Plymouth and a 59 Ford side by side was a nice and unique site to see.

Hey there Bob, I was just looking at Austin Swangers V8 conversion that was done to his 57 Plymouth six cylinder car and I noticed something that may help you, I remember you saying that your shifter cable is too short, Austins photo bucket pics show some different cables including a '64 tourqueflite cable, It also shows a '64 Chrysler torqueflite cable as being longer and that may solve your issue.

Very nice indeed Bob. I must say your car is a eye catcher! And the color I think really is nice. Smile Thanks for sharing. What a wonderful car.

Brian.
