PostSubject: Stock Air Cleaner Photos   Fri Mar 20, 2015 8:53 am

Does anyone have a single 4 barrel with a stock air cleaner on their 58 Plymouth? Mine is missing it's air cleaner and I want to see what a 58 stock air cleaner looks like so I can eventually find one. I may have a bit of a problem as a 1964 318 is in the car right now with a Carter 4 barrel, so I guess I'm not sure if I can even fit a 58 air cleaner on there. I believe they had single 4 barrels on 318's in 58 though so I think I have a shot at it. Did Chrysler use the same type air cleaners for several years in a row?  I know 57 air cleaners look very different but perhaps the 58 round flat design was carried over for several years? Any insight/photos would be much appreciated. I have one of those chrome aftermarket cleaners on there now and it has to go... Thanks, Bob

Marc...you are an investigation specialist for these 57-58 mopars! Thanks so much...I really appreciate it! Yes, Now that I see them, that style air cleaner looks familiar to me.

I'm a bit confused with some of those photos though because my old 57 ply. 301 4 barrel had a totally different air cleaner...one of those that hung down off the pass. side.

This is probably the one you had in mind for a 58. What does yours currently look like?

I think the 'lay down' ones are dual quad. I think some Hemis came with a single 'lay down' style.

I think the 57s were the last year for the lay downs. 58 started the upright ones and dual 58s where the ovals. What do y'all think?

JAG, I think that one you provided is what Mr. Bob's would have had (stock) as well.

Marc...this link you've posted above...this air cleaner looks exactly like what was on my 57 Belvedere with the factory power pack (4 barrel). It seems to me that in 58 they did away with these? I could be wrong.

Anyways I took a bunch of photos this morning. I keep forgetting that I have a 58 DeSoto in my garage to refer to. I took its air cleaner off and underneath is a 350 V8 w/ 2 barrel. A 318 V8 w/ Carter 4 barrel is on the 58 Belvy...Does it make sense that the air cleaner from the DeSoto fits on the Belvy?...because it fits quite well. Is this not a 4 barrel? I thought a 4 barrel vs 2 barrel air cleaners would be different and not fit...

Interesting, it looks like the Desoto's two barrel has a four barrel sized air horn. I know the two barrel carter BBD that came on the Plymouths have a smaller air horn than that AFB on your Plymmie. Is that a Stromberg on your Desoto Bob?

Chris, I'll try to crawl under the hood of the Desoto later today to see what kind of carb. it is. I just took it for granted that it was a Carter...but we'll see...

I'm confused why a 2 barrel air cleaner would fit a 4 barrel carb? The opening is like 4 1/2" on both. I'm not sure what I should be telling parts suppliers to look for now.

I checked into it Chris...With a good flashlight and a magnifying glass I was able to verify that it's a Carter on the DeSoto...Same throat opening size as the 4 barrel on the Belvy. hmmm

Anyone...do you think there's any reason to believe that it's not a 4 barrel on the Belvy? I wish I had some photos of the 4 barrel on my 57 but I do seem to remember 2 butterflies on that one. This Carter AFB on the Belvy has only one butterfly. I am a total novice when it comes to carbs...there has to be someone that knows their carbs out there...Come out come out wherever you are...Very Happy

That's definitely a four barrel AFB on your belvy, it's just got one choke plate on the one side.

Thank you everyone for posting your thoughts...photos...links to reference photos, links to e-bay auctions etc etc. I really appreciate it! I got my eye on that e-bay auction Joe (Sportone) thank you!

I also have a tip on another (below)...do you guys think this will one fit? It has been described to me as "close" to a 58 air cleaner...for an AFB 4 barrel. looks like the one in Joe Jag's photo don't ya think?

Just noticed this: Is the snorkel bent downwards?

Looks even more bent in this photo...
