PostSubject: Fix Them Oil Leaks!   Sat Mar 28, 2015 10:02 am

Just my luck! To make a long story short, My truck has had the smell of engine oil burning on the motor from a leak. It's been getting steadily worse for a month and I decided to put off repairing it as I've been extremely busy. I've been keeping a close eye on the oil level and figured that would buy me some time. Yesterday morning on the commute to work my battery and brake warning lights started flickering and the truck was close to stalling. I feathered it and made it to work with no issues. On the way home the same thing happened. Turns out the alternator is on it's way out as a result of oil from the leak getting into it. It's mounted on the passenger side at the bottom. Either the cam seals are leaking or the valve covers but from what I've researched, it's likely the cam seal. Gonna cost a pretty penny to fix the leaks and replace the alternator. Why would they mount it there?!?!?! :Marc : Here's a file photo of the alternator mounting position...

So what's the lesson to be learned? FIX THEM OIL LEAKS!!!! Evil or Very Mad

Looking at the photo as I was reading your post...I thought oh my goodness, did Wayne pull the motor out of his truck last night? :affraid: Then I got to the bottom and saw you called it a file photo. lol!

Ok...back down to earth...Wayne, I totally agree with you. Oil leaks are such a pain...they get put on the back burner all the time. I've never fixed one by just tightening bolts. Ever read a for sale ad..."It leaks a little oil but it's probably just the oil pan or valve covers that need little tightening." I always get a good laugh at those!

Bazaar location of that alternator! You didn't mention what make your truck is. Not sure if you still have what I remember you having...but is it a Cheby? Man...whatever designer came up with that one...well...It would be better if I just stop right here.

Bob

Yeah, one our customers spilled a little oil on the alternator of his wife's car and it failed in short order. At least it was replaced under warranty.

That is a bad spot for an alternator.  Prime spot for oil to seep on it! Plus oil is a good conductor for electricity. Once it gets in there it causes all sorts of trouble because it cant dissipate it off like water. So the end result is shorting out.  Good luck with it Wayne Smile

Well, it cost $1095.00 to fix the old girl. New valve cover gaskets, OEM alternator and a few other things like plugs, wires, one small heater hose and a new radiator cap were installed.

The plugs and wires were original with 109K miles! Now was the time to do them as the valve covers have to come off to change them out. I noticed she had a lot more power but she's got a barely noticeable intermittent shake at an idle. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will straighten itself out once the computer re-sychronizes. Smile

I've put about 3k in the truck over the past year in repairs. It's been paid for going on 12 years. I just don't want to strap myself with a car payment and figure I'm still ahead of the game $$ wise... Smile

Good to hear you've got your truck back. Now look to get some mileage out of her! God has blessed you and you've saved a lot of money by driving "a paid for" truck over the last 12 years Wayne. That's the only way to look at it!

Newer vehicles can be a real expensive fix, as the labor time to fix things increases. Glad you got it fixed, though, as I've seen underhood fires erupt due to oil leaks being let to go.

What kind of truck do you have?

Thanks Bob and John!

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 3.5 XS 4wd SUV.... Just turned 109k miles. She's Running great now! The body needs some work but I'm not worried about it. You buy parts like hoods and fenders very cheap online. Smile
