PostSubject: Junk yard treasures!   Sat Jun 27, 2015 9:56 pm

I visited a couple of salvage yards today and found me some goodies! The first yard I went to has been mostly devoid of 57-58 plymouths since they cleaned house several years ago but to my surprise, they had recently acquired a 58 plaza! I got me a few decent parts removed and then found out afterwards that the car had not been processed into the yard database because there was a potential overseas buyer! Thankfully, they sold me the parts anyway. I hope no one will get in trouble for it but hey, those cars are there to be sold as parts!

Great score Chris! I bet you had a fun day! Consider yourself very fortunate to spend a day doing such a thing. There's only one old yard left around here that I know of...but no 57-58 Plymouths in it. I take it this yard was about 120 miles away from you. I recognize all the parts except the 3 metal strip pieces. What are they from/for? It looks like you're planning to convert your front end to a 58 Smile

Thanks Bob, it was a fun day, a bit warm though. I actually went to two yards, the first one is on the way to the second but I had to deal with some detours along the route otherwise my mileage would have been less. The metal strips are kick panel retainers, they go down where the wind lace butts up against the kick panel. As for doing a conversion, I'm still on the fence but it's good practice to obtain parts just in case. Smile

You mean you don't have mint ones already? The problem with these are the fact that one has a dent in the front and the other has holes from corrosion.

Nice find. Do you want to sell the parts next to the horn ring?

Thanks, I'm not looking to sell this stuff at this time cause I still don't know if I'm going to make changes to my car or not.

Thanks John, I was really surprised to see that plaza sitting there, I think of all the good parts cars this yard had just a few years back and now the mopar population there has been decimated.

So I see that your chrome parts have dents and they have corrosion on them, so here is a suggestion to fix it:
Maybe send your chrome parts in need of fixing to a chrome restoration place near you. What these chrome restoration places do is they re-chrome your pieces to make them look like new, I think some places also remove dents as well. Very Happy

Unfortunately the headlight surrounds are anodized aluminum, not chrome plated steel. Sad

Oh, that does present a problem then.
I don't think anodized aluminum can be coated with chrome, can it?
Is the front Plymouth emblem anodized aluminum as well, or is it chromed steel?

Yeah, aluminum presents a problem when trying to chrome plate it, it seems to flake off after a while. The hood ornament is plated pot metal but I don't need show quality parts, I'm just happy this stuff is better than some of the other ones I've seen on ebay. Smile

Ok then, for the aluminum just try to clean it up by making it shiny as best as possible.
What I have found that works good for cleaning aluminum is steel wool. You want to go with the coarser type 1st but make sure it isn't too coarse or then it will scratch the aluminum. Then, just as if you are sanding a car with sandpaper getting ready for primer, you then want to go slowly to the more fine steel wool until it is shiny.
For the dents, try to pop them out as good as possible.
Hope it helps. Very Happy
