I would NOT say Pinewood Derbies are a hobby for me but my kids love to race and prep the cars - and the topic fit best here.

For those not familiar with the Pinewood Derby (or AWANA Grand Prix is what we call it at our church), the cars are all made/carved by the participant and parent from a solid block of pine. plastic wheels are then attached, weight is added and the car is painted to suit. The the day of the race, all of the cars are inspected, weighed and registered. Then, the kids race them on a gravity-fed track (think four lane, down-hill, wooden drag strip. It is fun.

So I made them a new creative car every year for several years until they outgrew the activity (two out three are in college now). But, I kept all of the cars and found them the other day unpacking from our latest military move.

Without further ado, here is my Christine derby car and one I made to resemble the deuce coop from American Graffiti. Enjoy.

Cool!
Our boy scout troop in the '60's had a pinewood derby contest one year, it was a lot of fun!

Nice job on both of them, Joe!

Thanks guys. Actually, Christine did really well over the years!. I mean really well. We won quite a few trophies with her (several 1st place in speed and a few best designs). The speed part is just how well you smooth and lubricate the axles and getting just the right amount of weight in the car. Design really doesn't play into it. I've seen crude rectangular blocks of wood, lubed and weighted just right, smoke an arrow dynamic derby car.

I like the open wheel aspect of the car! Some shows have Valve cover races too. Maybe a 383 or 392 hemi cover can be made into a car also. That would be so fun! Marc.
