Anyone know what style of screw or bolt is used for both the Floor Access Panel And Steering Column Seal? It's been so long I can't remember what was used...

Anyone have any pics perhaps?

NYBOB

Thank you John. Is this screw used for both the floor access panel and steering column seal? If so I'll have to see what I can find in my bolt bucket and find a suitable replacement in stainless. Smile

It's the same type of screw with captive washer, although the column seal ones are a larger diameter IIRC.

Thanks again John. As for the Gear Box installation so far nill. I was waiting for that "Eureka Moment" with regard to the placement of the wedge and nothing. Sad Even the service manual didn't help.

There are three bolts. One is longer than the other 2. I tried several configurations of the bolts and different positioning of the wedge and the box alignment is way off.

That's the problem with not being the guy who removed it. If someone would be so kind as to take pictures of a power steering gear box mounted to the frame and the bolts I'd be forever in your debt! This is a code red CCC SOS!!!

I did find this reference for a 58 Windsor.. Not sure if would be exactly the same or not. Sad

"On my dodge, the wedge goes to the back of the box (as pictured) and there should be 3 dome washers.

It basically goes all 3 bolts with a flat washer on each go through the chassis rail, then the front 2 bolts go through a long 1/2 round spacer, then through the steering box mounting holes, then 2 of the dome washers and then flat washers and nuts.

The back bolt has the wedge between the chassis and the box then the dome, flat washers and the nut.

You need to leave all the bolts loose until you have the column mounted in at the dash, then you adjust the wedge tho get the column straight.
"

He mentioned a long 1/2 inch round spacer which I do not have. Not sure if I need it or not. Need pics!

HELP! Sad

Make sure you use the correct spherical washers. Bolt the box in place loosely and slide the column jacket on to the box. Drive the wedge in until you see the jacket in the center under the dash. Bolt the jacket support in place so everything lines up. Then snug down the box bolts with the wedge in that position. Maybe your bolts are too short? Hope this helps. I will check and see if I have pics of mine apart.

I didn't have an adjusting wedge when I installed by box. I used washers to align the column. Any issues with using washers?

Thank You John & John! The problem is at the the two front (Shorter Bolts). The box needs to come away from the frame there as to "straighten" the path of the shaft. Just got these pics from Bob's 58 Desoto. THANK YOU BOB! By the look of it there is at least one washer or spacer in between the frame and the box on the top front bolt. This is where I think my issue is...

Thanks John.. Any spacers between the box and the frame on that top front bolt closest to the brake line junction block?

Other than the wedge, no. It should adjust properly with just the wedge.

Ok John. I assume the steering column shaft should come in perfectly straight and not be angled in the slightest where the column mounts to the dash?

I spent a few hours on it today and no matter what there is a slight (barely detectable) angle on the shaft. It's straight by the time it passes through the bearing at the top of the column. My guess is she's there.

The column jacket support should bolt right up to the jacket with the rubber inserts in place. If it lines up nice and flush without a fight, you should be in the clear. Remember to line up your turn signal lever hole straight before you tighten the jacket clamp on the box. It's also import to make sure that the routing of your turn signal wires are clear of rubbing the steering shaft. I have seen wire insulation worn away before.
