Edna wearing her raincoat. Think she'll be OK in eastern PA in the spring and summer like this?

My concern is that car covers will still trap moisture under them, and then all kinds of ugly things start to occur.

Like what Chris said. And its true. I can be a first hand witness to that. I had my '59 Chevy parked out front cause I had no other place to park her at the time. I covered her up with a soft car cover, then followed by a few tarps, all stretching from front to back and tied down, and no holes in any of them. I was sure that no moisture would get in, or so I had hoped. I left her there like that for a few months 'tilĀ the city got after me that I couldn't have a car parked out front besides on a designated driveway, etc... But anyhow, it was for the good that I moved her, and under the safety of a garage because even though I tried to make sure no moisture would getĀ under all the covers, moisture still got in, and from where I still have no clue.

One of the problems with car covers is condensation. Condensation can get trapped between the cover and the car and cause all sorts of troubles for a car. Sometimes covers can do more harm then good. But ive heard of these breathable car covers but not sure how well they work. If you are just covering a car for short periods then I think you will be fine. But anything lengthy im not sure.

If condensation somehow does not become a problem...wait till the wind kicks up.

No likey car covers outside. No

Thanks for the warnings, but the garage is such a pain.

Just stay aware of the weather Serge. Air it out frequently...especially if you see a nice day coming and you're hanging out for the afternoon. If you hear of high winds on the way, take the cover off and put it in the trunk.

I've kept my car at home nearly a week now, tarped through two precipitations, and as I drive her she's sounding even better than her old self, getting used to my local mechanic's adjustments. Even the seemingly recalcitrant starter's behaving. Great drive yesterday in the sun. Topped off the tank just to be extra careful. A few days ago I filled it up and put in the lead additive. She still smokes like a disillusioned French writer but she sounds great. Still renting the garage monthly for use as needed (seasonal or severe-weather forecast). Forecast calls for rain today so as a good classic-car daddy I went outside at 4:30am to tarp her... and of course it rained overnight. "Break out the towels and give her a rubdown!" That done, the opening for the antenna (hole punch through the material and layer of packing tape) made putting on her raincoat relatively easy by the iffy light of the back lot.

Talked to a recommended local body/paint place and he's booked for the next couple of weeks. OK. She's not a trailer queen but she came that way. Her new hood ornament from Jerry Lasseigne's workshop and her legal 1958 Pennsylvania license plate (registration sticker for 1964) make up for it.

Photo: last night. "Baby, let's cruise." The green ghost car of Delco.

Hi Serge, Edna is a work of art! Thanks for posting a photo of her. By the sounds of it, with your excitement for the car and all...you should do just fine by covering her outside. I think the previosly mentioned damage comes in when the tarps/covers are left on for weeks/months at a time.

Also...I hope all is going well with you and your girlfriend. I have been "remembering" you both...

Bob

Serge you car should be fine covering it like that. Its over a longer period of time where car covers can do harm. And I think it also varies where one lives. But in your case where your taking it on and off again I think you will be just fine! Just enjoy her. Smile

Thanks, Bob and Brian! So just garage her at the rented place if the forecast calls for extreme cold, severe thunderstorms (hail!), or lots of snow?

Just re-tarped her because rain isn't the only enemy. Lots of pollen! Sap! Bird feces!

Yes...that's a very good plan Serge...

Bad news: the tarp isn't really a tarp. Not waterproof. No wonder some cracks got slightly worse with two chips. I hit the roof. So the car's back in the garage and I'm at the mercy of neighbors when I want to get her out and back in. May get a real cover online; waterproof! In other news, she needs a horn relay so for the moment she's "speechless." At least she runs well. My girlfriend and her friends love her.
