PostSubject: Movie Car "sport tone" trim    Tue Oct 11, 2016 4:43 pm

Hi, all. If this has been answered somewhere before, I apologize - I can't find anything.

Can someone tell me what the movie car used for sport tone trim? I'm assuming it was some standard embossed aluminum on a roll. I don't recall seeing a close-up of it in the movie.

Thank you very much!

Are you talking about the trim pieces themselves, or the Sport Tone inserts that go behind the trim pieces?

Hi, Rob. Thanks for replying.

I'm talking about the aluminum inserts that go between the stainless strips. The originals had the square/waffle pattern, but I think the movie car used something more obtainable?

If my memory serves me correctly, they used aluminum in a roll for close-ups, and some cars had silver paint only (for distance shots); the other folks here know a lot more about the movie cars than I do, so hopefully they will chime in here with the info you seek....you can read a lot about it here: http://www.christinecarclubforum.com/t2314-the-christine-graveyard-discovery

This is what the original pattern looks like:

If you need a new set for your own car, you can buy the real deal off eBay for silly lots of money (and it's usually in pretty bad shape).

If you want re-pop stuff, from what I hear there's a fellow in Canada ("strocker470") who makes them from aluminum (or used to), typically sold on eBay, I believe, but are a diamond pattern, not a checked one like the original.

There's also a fellow named James Rawa ("FuryJim") who makes accurate checked sets occasionally out of Mylar, which look really nice...most folks who have them on their rebuilds have bought them from Jim.

I've also heard tell of folks in Australia/New Zealand buying the same pattern in an aluminum roll (used for kitchen backsplashes), but the company doesn't ship to the US.

Hope this helps, and anyone here feel free to correct me, if I'm wrong in any of this. Wink

Rob

Thanks, Rob! I remember seeing the ones from strocker470 on ebay in the past - I haven't seen any recently, though. I do have a set of originals in good shape, though they need to be re-anodized. Just trying to find options and possibilities.

Re anodizing the originals is a no go. Joe Caldwell tried it by the best of the best and it was a total failure. Don't waste your time.

One of the old school and more economic tricks if your using an original set is to hit them with the buffer until you get a uniform shine and then clear coat with regular automotive clear coat in a paint booth. Otherwise the best repop "Movie Correct" replacements are Marcell's from Canada...

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input! I just sent Marcel an email.

As far as buffing...can you buff something that's anodized and change the appearance? I don't have any experience with that.

Thank you.

Fury Jim can be found on Face Book under James Rawa. You can also Google him. He makes up the inserts for the 57 and 58 Plymouths. He does very nice work. Jim is located in NJ. If you can't locate him that way send me PM and I will give you his email.

Fury Jim Rawa's inserts are Mylar in a waffle pattern.  He would suggest mounting them to a thin aluminum insert. At least that is what he did for his car. Otherwise you will be gluing them to the car. Marc.

I've emailed Marcel in Canada - he has some. He told me they are a diamond pattern and that they're clear coated. Is anyone here using his inserts? I haven't been able to get pictures to see what the pattern looks like.

Thanks!

Daryl
