PostSubject: Understanding Hope...   Sat Jan 21, 2017 11:05 am

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3

“I hope Donald Trump brings back jobs to America." “I hope the Affordable Care Act will be repealed and replaced soon and I'll be able to afford healthcare for my family.“ I hope this new administration keeps our country safe from Radical Islamic Terrorism." As this new president comes into power, I hope it generates hope in our hearts for good things to take place soon in our nation.

In the opening paragraph above, I use the word hope several times in a completely different way than how it is used in the Bible. When you or I speak of hope, we typically are expressing optimism about something that is uncertain. But when Bible believing Christians say that we have hope in Christ, it means that we know for sure—beyond the shadow of a doubt—that Jesus will come through. From the believer’s perspective, hope is something of certainty we look forward to. It is living in constant expectation.

When Paul speaks of it in Scripture, he knows the message of hope is something that will get his readers through the day. How else could he himself have faced the opposition, persecution and hardship that his life in Christ presented to him? Yet Paul’s message focuses on things eternal, rather than the struggles of this world.

Here in the 21st century we can fix our eyes on things unseen because our hope in Christ is the only way we can be confident in this life and the next. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23

Insight: When you use the word hope, think of the "Divine hope" that you can have in Jesus Christ. Do you have it? If you do, that's a hope of which you can be certain!

Reader's Prayer: Dear Father in Heaven, Please remind me of the hope I have in Jesus Christ my Savior in which I can be certain. Hoping for good things to take place here on earth is fine, but by putting it in perspective with the true hope I have in Jesus Christ and my eternal life in heaven is something I must do in order to keep my heart in the right place, with You. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
