PostSubject: E-body rear end ??   Fri Apr 06, 2012 4:03 pm

I have read thru the forum and cant find the measurements I need to compare to the original rear of my 58. I have a guy who has several rear ends for sale and I was told by several people that the E-body rear end is a direct swap ? I plan to get the rear end on sunday if I can figure out which one is the E-body rear end.

Ok here we go again !!! I have heard E-body rear end for so long, now Im told the C-body is th best for running the skinny 14 wide whites tires. So can anyone tell me if the C or E body is the best. What is the widest tire that will fit under the C-body ? Im getting down to the wire and have to get this figured out....Carbs on the 440 and will be running hopefully the end of the week.

Sorry to hear that, Charlie.

Have you considered using the stock rear end for now, it can always be changed out at a later date, or are you running a big block with high HP?

Charlie if you moved to Mexico you will be in a world of Hurt Hee! Hee! Just kidding Charley,

I hate to see anybody flusterated, I feel lie running away from home, Been working on my new rollar rockers, first thing I pulled the other rockers odd and Just as soon as I did I said yea crazy guy your push rods won't work Need ball on one end and cup on the other one not two ball ends.

So call Kevin up and he said he thoughnt her had some , the guy I bought or rather tradsed with. So he said come on over . He gave me a brand new set of Push rods.

I start setting everything up and Now I need more shims he said he haqd some but most of them qwere to thick.

So that is three trips at 25 miles each I made ih the l;ast couple of days.

Now I just ordered some from Summit and I have to wait a couple three days will put me into next week getting her running again.

I will be hard pressed getting ready for the Fox Hunt, It is a two day Race where ther Ladies get in Free and they have Jet Cars. Smile

Sorry yoiu are having trouble on your build,. That is why I have built my last car and Justg try to enjoy them , But things don't roll right along with me either. lol!

Hee! Hee! I hear you there Charley Smile Every time I take my 58 out I am chalanged by some of those plus other Cars that think they can go fast, Most of them would have their hands full , But Im older and much wiser. All my racing is at the track, Street racing was fun back in the 60's or so but now it can cost you as lot if you get caught, If I lost my licence I don'tknow what I would do. Smile People that has cars that they think they are hot, most of them say they will rin in the 12 or 13's take them to the track and more liker go 15 or 16's if they are luck, When most of them are smoking their tires at the starting line I am moving down the track Hee! Hee!

Charlie, here's my advise to you my friend.

Stop asking 20 different People for their opinion as this will only confuse the heck out of you. You are placing a high Torque 440 in your car like Chaney and Bob did. I would ask one of them the best route for a rear, do what that 1 person recommend's, and you will be fine. Just too many cook's in the kitchen.

Good Luck,
Joe C NY

Yep. Its not a bolt in - but the width is perfect. I am running 15x8" rims with the common 4.25" backspacing with 275/60R15 tires. There is still tons of room and I could easily go bigger. I got a 3.27 gear with a trak-lok. There is a bunch of pictures in my resto thread. It has the same bolt pattern as stock, is availble with disks or drums, is widely available with a variety of gear ratios, and the explorer rears are 31 spline axles, and extra thick tubes. The explorer 8.8 rears are very strong.

The only thing you have to do it move the leaf spring pad. I just bought new ones from mopar performance, ground them to fit perfect, and welded them on. You have to be careful when welding so that you do not warp the housing.

In my opinion the e-body rear is a little to wide. It would require you to run rims with a lot of backspacing. Even Bob's redsled is running a narrower than stock rear. I believe he is running an early B-body rear.

I totally agree with you on this, Bobby. Out here, if you are caught street racing, the police can impound your car, and at the judge's discretion, order it crushed, with the offender getting the privelege of watching it go into the crusher.

Best to keep the racing on the track, there are many safety measures in place there that are not on the street, especially the lack of other drivers and pedestrians.

When I was in high school, it was fun to watch the friday night street races that went on in an industrial area outside of town, but a driver lost control nearly killing himself and injuring a half dozen onlookers, so I quit going there.

They have been several young people here in this area lost there Lives by street racing , Usally late at night , Mostly the fast and furious rice burner cars.

I had a friend Kelvin Had a 69 GTO Hopped up quite a bit. It wasn't but a few months later he was racing and had a wreck and killed himself and another friend in the car. He was a great kid Both him and his brother came out to watch me race. Kevin Just fell all to pieces after that, lost his life and his business. His life is ruined forever. Crying or Very sad

FYI, the E-body rear is Within a 1/4" of being dead nuts on to the original width of the '58 Rear.
The '66-'70 B-body rear is about 1" each side narrower than the original rear.

The C-body rears most of 'em will be too wide.
