October 2012. The take a '489' case and load up a sure grip and ring gear with a modified crush sleeve. good pics and info. Marc

It is not on line yet. (unless you have an online subscription) Page 70-74 October 2012 Car Craft Mag. The jist is using a non crushable sleeve in he 489 case by Ratech. PN 4103. $33 RatechMFG.com 513-742-2111 Then shim it as if it were a 741,742 diff. They lucked out and built one out of 2 for < $400! Marc.

That is what I have been doing for years. The stock crush sleeve can crush more under heavy use and kill your gears. That is why a lot of racers liked the 742 case. The 489 has a larger tapered pinsion (1 7/8") that does away with a stress riser that is on the smaller (1 3/4") on the 742 pinion.

Funny mopar based trivia - the 741 case which is considered the weakest, has a larger pinion and bearings that the 12 bolt chevy and the 9" ford. The ford does have the additional rear pinion bearing advantage however.
