PostSubject: Better Bread   Sun May 10, 2015 11:42 pm

Jesus answered, "It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4

After Jesus was baptized He was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.  He is hungry and in His own wilderness, a sequel of sorts to the hungry Israelites in the wilderness when Moses led them out of slavery in Egypt. Unlike the Israelites with their grumbling, Jesus withstands the test perfectly. And in true tempter's fashion, Satan shows up when Jesus is hungry, alone, and weak.

Satan reminds Jesus that He can do anything, even turn stones to bread. Jesus already knows this but answers, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." The beauty of this statement is that Jesus is "the Word" that comes from the mouth of God. We should not live by it, as though following instructions. We need to live on it as it is what sustains us and feeds us!

Jesus said to the Jews, I am the bread of Life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” John 6:48-51.

Insight: Don't be confused and/or argue about this as the Jews did when they heard Jesus say these things. There's much more to life than just eating bread or anything else that will only temporarily satisfy. The "better bread" is to be fed spiritually as some day when this life is over we will hear the Lord say. "I knew you" or "I didn't know you."

Dear Lord, Help me to take these words of Jesus into my heart. I want the better bread, the living bread that came down from heaven. Jesus is this living bread. In His precious Name I pray, Amen

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
