He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." Genesis 3:10

The first instance of fear in the Bible follows the first instance of sin; the connection is clear. The root of all fear is alienation from God, and the root of alienation from God is sin. If we walked with God as Adam did before the fall, if we had perfect fellowship with Him, there would be nothing in the universe we would have reason to fear. The Lord is sovereign over all; with Him at our side, fear would make no sense, right? Without Him, though, we have good reason to be afraid. Fears about finances, our futures, the evils of the world, death and destruction... they all can overwhelm us. We may even fear God Himself.

But praise God He did not leave Adam (or us!) as He found him! He promised a Savior, One who would crush the head of the serpent that had tempted Adam and Eve to sin. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." Genesis 3:15. That Savior is Jesus Christ, and He died in your place for your sins, defeating sin and death. Living in Christ means that He is indeed at our side, and because of that, you need not fear the storms that rage through this life.

Insight: The fear of the Lord (a holy awe of Him) is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10 Let us develop a holy awe of God and begin to gain wisdom. Knowledge of Him will give us understanding and He will love us back into fellowship with Himself.

Dear Lord God, I'd like to be in awe of You so I can begin to gain wisdom. I want to have knowledge of You so I can gain understanding. Nothing else is as important as gaining these truths of Your Word and living in Christ. Please attend to me Father. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
