...but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Thanksgiving day dates back to the Protestant Reformation and is rooted in English traditions. Then in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a U.S. national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens." It was brought about to remind us how good we have it. And for many of us, we certainly can relate because overall, as a nation, we certainly have it really good.

It’s always easy to feel joy when things are going well, but it’s far more difficult to thank God for His presence when we’re going through a hard time. I have a family member that's a single-parent. I see first hand how often she feels alone and has no one to turn to. Then I am always blessed how she and her daughter take good sound advice...that they certainly do have Someone. The Lord wants them to take all their troubles to Him in prayer, especially when it seems like they're standing alone.

And especially when God is silent, we need to trust that He is still there. Though we feel that we have been abandoned, we never are truly by ourselves. He wants us to pour out our hearts to Him continually “by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving.” The apostle, Paul sees this as putting our faith into practice and standing firm.

Naturally we want to share our concerns with someone who will sympathize with us, or seek an organization that promises to serve our needs. As helpful as these resources may be, if we rely entirely on them instead of God, we can miss the special blessing God has for us when we stand firm in our faith and our dependence on Him.

Insight: We need to keep trusting Christ through good and bad times alike. Strive to stand firm, give thanks today and every day, no matter what.

Reader's Prayer: Dear Lord...Thank you for all you have done for me. I take so much for granted through the good times.  Please remind me to present all my requests to You by prayer and petition with thanksgiving. In Jesus' Name, Amen

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Truly a day of thanks.

"Ever since he bought that car, he's been obsessed with it!"
