PostSubject: Confidence Amidst Chaos   Sun Feb 21, 2016 1:00 pm

1 God is our refuge and strength,
   an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
   and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
   and the mountains quake with their surging.
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
   the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
   God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
   he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord Almighty is with us;
   the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the Lord has done,
   the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
   to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
   he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
   I will be exalted among the nations,
   I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
   the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 46:2

The concern in Psalm 46 is that the people of God are oppressed, living in a world where the nations around them are in total chaos. The situation, by human assessment, is bleak. Sound familiar? Yet, from beginning to end, this Psalm is filled with confident praise. How can this be and what can we learn from it?

The “Be still, and know that I am God” words of Psalm 46:10 should be a wake up call for us. Especially for those who are unsaved; those who have not received Jesus Christ as their sin-bearer. There's much security when we put our trust in the Lord. First for our salvation to get "under His umbrella" then for safety and ultimately for all our needs. In Psalm 46, the trusting people are exulting God in His unmatched sovereignty. They rejoice because they know He is in control. When God says “Be still and know that I am God," it's a reminder for the Israelites to pause...and trust in God that He will take care of everything. We need to do this too!

But there is something else for us. The words of this Psalm reminded the people that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (v. 1); “The Lord Almighty is with us” (vv. 7, 11). No matter how severe the world’s mayhem, we can always worship and rejoice because, if Jesus Christ is truly our Savior, He is “with us” too.

Insight: If you're not saved, get saved. If you are saved, "Be still and know that He is God."

Reader's Prayer, Dear God, Help me to receive the truth of Psalm 46 into the center of my heart. I want to know of the "full security" there is in You. I want to "Be still and know You are God" In Jesus' Name, Amen.

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
