…the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. Matthew 20:28

In the 21st century the word “ransom” conjures up the idea of a kidnapper demanding money in exchange for the life of the captured one. In another setting, money demanded for the release of prisoners of war is called a ransom.

In the Bible, a ransom is closely related to redemption. Under the Old Testament law, if a man had an ox with a reputation for goring, injuring and killing people and did not keep that ox secured, the man could be put to death if it killed someone. However, he could escape death by paying a ransom to redeem his life. So anything that releases one from punishment is called a ransom.

This is exactly what Christ did for us on the cross. We are all captive to sin and under the penalty of eternal death (separation from God for eternity). No amount of kindness, generosity or good deeds on our part can pay the ransom. It could only be paid by Jesus Christ, the One who knew no sin. In Christ crucified, we have been set free. Think of how amazing this is; that the ransom was paid by the One whose holiness and justice demands that we be condemned. Hallelujah for the cross!

Read what the apostle Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 2:5-7: For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Insight: Have you been set free from sin and it's penalty? Have you stopped trying to ignore this truly awesome Biblical fact? Have you stopped trying to be a good enough person to pay your own ransom? The ransom was paid by Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary nearly 2000 years ago! Accept it...receive it and walk with Jesus the rest of your days.

Reader's Prayer: Dear Lord, I believe Your Word...and receive Jesus Christ as my personal Savior because I know He paid the price for my sins...He paid my ransom on the cross at Calvary. In Jesus' Name I pray Amen.

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
1 John 5:11-12 cheers
