PostSubject: Words of Encouragement   Sat Oct 01, 2016 11:57 am

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:17-18

At the memorial service of a dear friend, my pastor spoke of how words of comfort rarely suffice in times of sorrow. Grief can be covered with words and Hallmark card sentiments, but we still need more. What we need is a word from the Lord.

God has not left us in silence. Paul wrote to the believers in Thessalonica who were grieving the persecution and loss of their Christian friends, “by the word of the Lord.” For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 1 Thessalonians 4:15

Paul’s word choice of “falling asleep” also implies our “waking up.” We wake up to these understandings: Our weeping in sorrow is definitely not without hope. Those who die as Christ's followers will immediately be present with Him. Jesus brings us the privilege of being raised up to be with Him forever...along with our loved ones who trusted in Him/followed Him.

One day and re-united with our loved ones; we have the true words of encouragement and hope because they come to us from the Lord of all hope whose plans are to give us hope and a future. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Insight: Hold fast to Jesus, the hope set before you as you rejoice in sufferings, persevere in trials, grow in character and find encouragement.

Dear God, Help me to hold fast to Jesus...my only hope. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
1 John 5:11-12 cheers
