Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” John 11:1-4

You can probably think of several people you know with serious illnesses. As I write this, I quickly can think of a half dozen people suffering from advanced forms of cancer, including my beloved wife. My wife and several have been faithful in serving the Lord and His people. But now, instead of days filled with work or grocery store trips or various outings and events, they are being taken to chemo treatments and doctor appointments. While they used to run errands for others, the favors are now being done for them.

When Jesus was told Lazarus was sick, He assured His friends, “This sickness will not end in death.” There is a great saying among Christians: Born once, die twice. Born twice, die once. Without the second birth (John 3), a lost person dies physically and eternally. But when one is born again by the Spirit of God, death holds no power; “to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)

With a true Christian, sufferings of illness are infused with the hope, joy, and peace of the Savior. Jesus changes everything! We know this because it is written in the Scriptures and on the smiling faces of those who are in Christ.

Insight: Death has no power over the one who is born again.

Reader's Prayer: Dear Lord, Please cheer your sick children with the thought that, no matter what the prognosis, You are with them today, tomorrow and forever. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
